An Old Age Home must have a pollution free, calm environment. It also must have all basic facilities.

It can be located in an urban or rural setting depending upon the nature of people likely to live there. It varies from person to person. It depends on desires of different people. Some people may like relaxing calm surroundings; some people may like to live in an urban area where they can have speedy contact to facilities in town.


What should be Basic requirements for home of old age?

The design of an Old Age Home depends upon the economic and social status of those people who will live in homes. It could be cottages, independent rooms or dormitory type.

The rooms of any Old Age Home should be spacious, open & well-ventilated.

It would be helpful for senior citizens to have all possible facilities at ground floor of the building. If upper floors are there, then it must be connected with a sloping ramp which would provide easy passage facility for using wheel chair when required.

For avoiding the slippery problem for elders the bathrooms and toilets must have rough floor covering. Railings must be appropriate and suitable for Old people for support.

A separate room must be built where unwell sick people can get short-term treatment whenever needed.

An amusement room should be made for spending leisure time and there should be also a room for medical care.

What kind of people required in home for old age people?

An administrator must be in an Old Age Home for functioning or running the home. He/she is responsible for people of the home.

Along with the administrator, there should also be supporting staff like  attendees, maids,  and cooks. All these people are required for running an Old Age Home efficiently.

There is also need of medical officer to focus on health needs of Old people. It would be good to have a hospital nearby where emergency facilities can be availed, or it would be easier to avail enough services of part-time doctors then.

A nutritionist should be also available in an Old Age Home to look after the nutritional necessities of senior citizens. They can recruit at least a nutritionist who works part-time.

For taking responsibility of many things a qualified professional social worker should be appointed in human resources.

Health workers and nursing staff that are specially trained for elderly care must be recruited.

Medical care requirements in this kind of institution are?

Only after senior physician’s advice should medical accessories as well as medicines needed for resident’s treatment should be stored. Such as: intravenous sets, suction apparatus and oxygen cylinders are always required in such institutions. Expiry dates of all these drugs should be checked periodically and thus be replaced on regular basis. If situation arises, transport facilities must be made always available to rush residents to intensive care  hospital.
